Trace-Driven Simulation of Document Caching Strategies for Internet Web Servers

چکیده
Given the continued growth of the WorldWide Web, performance of Web servers is becoming increasingly important. File caching can be used to reduce the time that it takes a Web server to respond to client requests, by storing the most popular les in the main memory of the Web server, and by reducing the volume of data that must be transferred between secondary storage and the Web server. In this paper, we use trace-driven simulation to evaluate the eeects of various replacement, threshold , and partitioning policies on the performance of a Web server. The workload traces for the simulations come from Web server access logs, from six diierent Internet Web servers. The traces represent three diierent orders of magnitude in server activity and two diierent orders of magnitude in time duration. The results from our simulation study show that frequency-based caching strategies, using a variation of the LFU (Least Frequently Used) replacement policy, perform the best for the Web server workload traces considered. Thresholding policies and cache partitioning policies for Internet Web servers do not appear to be eeective.

Even with rapid advances in the technology of processors, memory, storage and networks, the growth in web-based information and the increased use of web-based applications continue to place demands on the Internet. Performance of web servers continues to present challenges. Delays in access to web-based information, i.e., access latency, continues to be a serious problem, even with higher bandw...

Most caching schemes in wide-area, distributed systems are client-initiated. Decisions of when and where to cache information are made without the beneet of the server's global knowledge of the usage patterns. In this paper, we present a new caching strategy: geographical push-caching. Using the server's global knowledge and a derived network topology, we distribute data to cooperating servers....

Web caching is used to improve the performance of the Internet Web servers. Document caching is used to reduce the time it takes Web server to respond to client requests by keeping and reusing Web objects that are likely to be used in the near future in the main memory of the Web server, and by reducing the volume of data transfer between Web server and secondary storage. The heart of a caching...
متن کاملTrace Driven Simulation of GDSF# and Existing Caching Algorithms for Web Proxy Servers
Web proxy caching is used to improve the performance of the Web infrastructure. It aims to reduce network traffic, server load, and user perceived retrieval delays. The heart of a caching system is its page replacement policy, which needs to make good replacement decisions when its cache is full and a new document needs to be stored. The latest and most popular replacement policies like GDSF us...

The advent of the Web service brought out the explosive growth of Internet, which necessitates a scheme to reduce the netwrok traac. Caching is a popular method in reducing such traac, and it is widely used in many Web servers, clients, and proxy servers. Since an object of Web service is accessed as a whole, the caching scheme for such object must be diierent from others that usually treat a p...
